As the wife of Black Bear’s CEO and the designer behind so many of our ideas, I have learned that true luxury in a Texas home is not about loading it up with flashy gadgets. It is about creating a home that feels beautiful, strong, comfortable, and deeply livable every single day. The very best innovations are the ones that quietly work in the background—making the house perform better, feel better, and age better—without ever making it feel cold or overly “techy.”
For me, the first and most important investment is always the building envelope. In Texas, the battle against heat is real, so I believe in airtight construction, quality spray foam insulation, radiant barrier strategy, and beautiful low-e high-performance windows. These are not the glamorous choices people brag about first, but they are the ones that make a home feel calm, efficient, and luxurious for years to come.
Right alongside that is aggressive air sealing, including solutions like AeroBarrier. This may sound technical, but the result is simple: less dust, fewer drafts, better humidity control, and a house that feels more polished and expensive the moment you walk in. I have personally framed the skeletons of massive homes and installed high-durability roofing systems that serve as a home’s first line of defense against the elements.
