Keeping up with the Joneses is not a good idea in today's world. Having your own dreams come to life around you, well that's just priceless.

As the wife of Black Bear’s CEO and the designer behind so many of our ideas, I have learned that true luxury in a Texas home is not about loading it up with flashy gadgets. It is about creating a home that feels beautiful, strong, comfortable, and deeply livable every single day. The very best innovations are the ones that quietly work in the background—making the house perform better, feel better, and age better—without ever making it feel cold or overly “techy.”
For me, the first and most important investment is always the building envelope. In Texas, the battle against heat is real, so I believe in airtight construction, quality spray foam insulation, radiant barrier strategy, and beautiful low-e high-performance windows. These are not the glamorous choices people brag about first, but they are the ones that make a home feel calm, efficient, and luxurious for years to come.
Right alongside that is aggressive air sealing, including solutions like AeroBarrier. This may sound technical, but the result is simple: less dust, fewer drafts, better humidity control, and a house that feels more polished and expensive the moment you walk in. Comfort is a form of luxury, and air sealing is one of those details that truly delivers it.
I also believe strongly in zoned HVAC with fresh-air ventilation. In a larger custom home, it makes such a difference to have steady temperatures from room to room, cleaner air, and a better overall living environment. When done well, the house feels fresher, healthier, and more balanced without wasting energy.
Another innovation I think is worth every bit of attention is smarter solar-control glass. Texas light is beautiful, and I love large windows, but too much untreated glass can work against you. The answer is not less glass—it is better glass. High-performing coatings and, in select places, smart or electrochromic glass can help manage heat and glare while still allowing the architecture to shine.
In the kitchen, I see induction cooking as one of the smartest luxury upgrades available today. It is sleek, fast, precise, and cleaner for indoor air than traditional gas cooking. It feels modern, but in a refined way, especially when paired with excellent ventilation and cabinetry that keeps the whole room looking timeless.
I am also a big believer in multi-function water fixtures—the kind that offer filtered, chilled, boiling, or even sparkling water. These are the kinds of upgrades that do not just impress guests; they genuinely make life easier every day while keeping counters cleaner and less cluttered.
For refrigeration, I think the most exciting advancements are not the oversized screens, but the quieter improvements: better food organization, specialty temperature zones, inventory support, and smarter storage that actually help reduce waste. These are the kinds of thoughtful upgrades that make a kitchen work harder and better for a busy household.
Even laundry has become more interesting. The newer all-in-one premium washer-dryer systems can be incredibly useful, especially in guest quarters, pool houses, or secondary laundry areas. When they save space and function beautifully, that is a very worthwhile innovation in my eyes.
In the bath, I always lean toward wellness features that feel restorative, not gimmicky. Better soaking tubs, steam, warming drawers, and thoughtful water controls create a spa-like experience that adds true quality to everyday life. I would much rather invest in a bath that helps you unwind than one filled with unnecessary flashing technology.
And finally, one of the greatest luxuries today is what I call hidden integration. The best homes do not feel like gadget showrooms. They have lighting scenes, discreet speakers, hidden charging, built-in automation, and controls that disappear into the architecture. That kind of invisible sophistication feels far more timeless and elegant than screens and flashy devices in every room.
If I am advising where the money should go first in a Black Bear-style luxury Texas home, it is always this: the envelope and windows, air sealing, zoned HVAC with fresh-air ventilation, strategic solar control, induction with strong ventilation, and quiet, hidden smart integration. Those are the investments that truly improve the way a home lives.
And what would I skip unless the budget is truly unlimited? Full-house smart glass, novelty appliances with weak service support, oversized app-heavy gadgets that add little real comfort, and visible tech everywhere. To me, the most beautiful homes are not the loudest ones—they are the ones that feel effortless, enduring, and thoughtfully designed from the inside out.
That is the kind of luxury I believe in.

In an era where many contractors simply manage spreadsheets and subcontractors, there is a profound, disappearing value in a builder who truly understands the "bones" of a house. My journey in this industry didn't begin in an office; it started over forty years ago on the high-intensity floor of a truss plant. As a teenager, I didn't just assemble wood; I studied the geometry of tension, the physics of weight-bearing loads, and the structural integrity required to keep a roof over a family's head. My obsession with doing things right the first time quickly propelled me to the position of Lineboss, where I learned my first lessons in leadership, precision, and the high-stakes responsibility of quality control.
By my early twenties, I moved from the plant to the field, joining professional concrete crews during the most physically demanding years of my life. I spent that decade mastering the most unforgiving part of any build: the foundation. I learned early on that if your slab isn't perfect, every subsequent inch of the house will suffer. That "foundation-first" mentality has stayed with me for a lifetime.
Now, at 60 years old, I bring a rare, comprehensive perspective to every project I touch—one that only comes from four decades of sweat-equity and thousands of hours on active job sites. My hands-on mastery extends through every critical phase of the build. I have personally framed the skeletons of massive homes and installed high-durability roofing systems that serve as a home’s first line of defense against the elements. I have spent years in the "guts" of the house, managing complex plumbing and electrical systems and designing custom lighting layouts that define a home’s atmosphere.
Beyond the main residence, I specialize in the architecture of the entire property. I design unique outer structures—from specialized workshops and high-end barns to functional outbuildings—that are far more than just "extra space." My goal is to make these structures highly accessible and incredibly functional, ensuring they integrate perfectly with your land and your lifestyle. Whether it’s a detached garage or a custom utility space, I apply the same structural rigors I learned in the truss plant to ensure these outer buildings are as durable as the primary home.
My expertise is just as sharp when it comes to the finished interior and high-end stonework. I am a specialist in tile installation, bringing precision to custom flooring, intricate walk-in showers, and professional tub wall wraps that provide both beauty and a watertight seal. I combine this with the aesthetic precision of sheetrock installation and the intricate artistry of fine finish trim, ensuring the surfaces and details of your home are as flawless as the structure behind them.
At 60, I’ve seen every building code change and every architectural trend come and go. I know where the shortcuts are usually taken, and more importantly, I know how to prevent them. When you work with me, you aren't just hiring a contractor; you are hiring forty years of seasoned wisdom. I am the builder who catches the small error before it becomes a massive problem. I ensure that every stud, wire, and tile is installed with the authority and precision that only a lifetime in the trades can provide. Your home isn't just a project to me—it's the culmination of a life's work dedicated to building things that last.
Over the same forty-year span that I spent mastering new construction, I have dedicated myself to the meticulous art of high-end remodeling. At 60 years old, I understand that a remodel is about more than just a fresh coat of paint—it’s about reimagining a home’s potential while respecting its structural integrity. I specialize in transforming dated spaces into beautiful, modern bathrooms and gourmet kitchens that serve as the heart of the home. My expertise extends to expansive living areas and the creation of deluxe outdoor kitchens and custom patios that blend seamless luxury with rugged durability. Whether I am installing a custom tub wrap, laying intricate tile floors, or engineering a functional outdoor entertainment space, I bring the same "Line Boss" precision and "foundation-first" mentality to every renovation. When you trust me with your home, you are hiring four decades of seasoned wisdom to ensure your remodel is as structurally sound as it is visually stunning.
